I was just enjoying Jenna's blog in which she posted a song that she feels is the perfect love song. I agree "When You Say Nothing At All" is a great song that captures that perfect feeling of love that goes beyond words.
Then I began thinking about what song I would choose. The first thing I thought of was Nickleback's "Too Damn Good" which is our unofficial song (Daniel and I). We got attached to the song because we had a long distance relationship when we first started out and because with our terrible luck with relationships, meeting each other seemed too good to be true. I will not post the lyrics here mostly because some of them are a bit beyond what I want to add to my blog.
Figuring there must be another song that maybe had a few elements of what we have been describing as romance, I remembered Enrique Iglesias' "Hero". I can already hear the eye rolls and I have not even posted the blog yet. Give me a chance to explain before you flip to the next blog. First the lyrics:
Hero lyrics
Songwriters: Barry, Paul Michael; Iglesias, Enrique M; Taylor, Mark Philip;
Let me be your hero
Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?
Would you run, and never look back?
Would you cry, if you saw me crying?
And would you save my soul, tonight?
Would you tremble, if I touched your lips?
Would you laugh? Oh please tell me this
Now would you die, for the one you love?
Hold me in your arms, tonight
I can be your hero, baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away
Would you swear, that you'll always be mine?
Or would you lie? Would you run and hide?
Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind?
I don't care you're here, tonight

I can be your hero, baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away
Oh, I just wanna hold you
I just wanna hold you, oh yeah
Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind?
Well I don't care you're here, tonight
I can be your hero, baby
I can kiss away the pain, oh yeah
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away
I can be your hero, I can kiss away the pain
(I can be your hero, baby)
And I will stand by you, forever
You can take my breath away
You can take my breath away
An' I can be your hero

This song has a hero, and apparently a damsel in distress who he wants to save. But wait-there's more! He is longing for her. Remember the anguish our heroes have endured while waiting for approval from the one they are attracted to? This guy is suffering so much he asks her to save his soul (line 5). In some of the early stories we read, the hero thinks he has gone or will go mad from the feelings he has for the girl. Please note in line 16 of the song, he asks if he has lost his mind. So, we have attraction, tension, the spiraling downward as he longs for her so much he thinks he is going crazy, and we leave the story with him offering to be her hero. We do not get a lot of closure or a happy ending on this one, but we are left hoping the maiden will accept the grand hero's offer to kiss away the pain. Which, I suppose could be her anguish caused from longing for him. Please do not watch the official video; it is terrible and I do not want to ponder what that poor girl was being saved from if it involved rubbing money all over herself. Let's leave it at the lyrics. The following link will take you to a video that has the lyrics without the parts I do not wish to discuss. Truly, the way he sings the song adds a lot to the meaning, in my opinion.

I do not think this is the perfect love song, but it is a nice thought. Through music we can grab a little escape into romance when we cannot sit down with a great book. Thank you to Jenna for beginning the conversation. I hope you do not mind that I continued on my own path with it.
